Roof Rack on Sunroof Vehicles: Installation Guide

Roof Rack on Sunroof Vehicles: Installation Guide

When traveling outdoors, carrying items on the roof has become a common choice for many SUV owners. Whether installing a roof box or a roof tent, a Roof Rack on Sunroof Car needs to be secured first.

However, for owners of vehicles with sunroofs, the biggest concern is often: can a sunroof be fitted with a roof rack?

This concern mainly focuses on two aspects: first, the weight limit of the glass; many owners worry that the weight of the roof rack will directly press on the sunroof glass, causing it to crack;

Second, obstruction of the sunroof's opening and closing, worrying that the sunroof will not be able to open or close properly after installation, thus affecting the daily user experience.

Understanding Your Vehicle's Roof Structure

Typically, the stress point of a SUV Roof Rack Installation is not on the glass, but on the roof's longitudinal rails (Flush Rails/Integrated Rails) or anchor points. However, not all roofs are the same, so you need to understand the specific design of your vehicle's roof.

  1. Bare Roof: For models without factory-installed roof rack interfaces, installation is relatively more difficult, but not impossible. Common solutions include using a door frame clamp-on crossbar system or installation via custom mounting points. Due to the involvement of the vehicle's structure, professional installation is strongly recommended.
  2. Mounted Roof: The roof has pre-drilled screw holes or cover plates, allowing for direct mounting of the crossbars using dedicated brackets. This method offers excellent load-bearing capacity and is one of the most secure installation methods.
  3. Integrated Roof Rack: Some SUVs come with a roof rack or crossbars pre-installed, allowing for direct installation of a roof box or tent. This is the simplest installation method.
  4. Longitudinal Rail Roof: Longitudinal rail roofs are one of the most common structures on SUVs, making roof rack installation relatively convenient.

Raised Rails leave a gap between the roof and the rails, allowing for easy crossbar mounting; Flush Rails are flush with the roof and usually have hidden mounting points, requiring dedicated brackets for installation.

Regardless of the rail design, both offer good compatibility and stability, making them ideal for installing roof boxes or tents.

How to choose the right roof rack for a sunroof vehicle?

There are many types and sizes of roof rails on the market, so we can consider multiple factors when choosing one.

When selecting a roof rail, we recommend prioritizing the following points:

Vehicle-Specific: For sunroof models, it's recommended to use the original factory mounting points or extended roof rails to avoid interference with the sunroof track.

Noise Reduction and Vibration Damping: Aerodynamic roof bars effectively reduce wind noise and lower the risk of glass resonance.

Installation Structure:

  • Clamp Style: Flexible installation, but may cause slight scratches to the paint.
  • Track Mounted: More stable and with better load-bearing capacity, but requires the vehicle to have a track design.

6 Steps to Ensure Proper Roof Rail Installation

1.Before installing the roof rail, the owner needs to perform two key checks: Consult the Owner’s

Manual: Locate the Roof Load Limit to understand the difference between dynamic and static load capacities.

Measure the crossbar height: Ensure sufficient space between the crossbar and the sunroof to prevent the sunroof from colliding with the crossbar or the bottom of the trunk when opened.

2.Clean the contact points: Remove fine sand and dust from the installation area to prevent particles from abrading the sealing strip or glass edges.

3.Allow sunroof movement clearance: During installation, simulate sunroof opening to ensure a safe distance of at least 5cm between the crossbar and the sunroof glass.

4.Use a torque wrench: Strictly follow the Nm (Newton-meter) value in the instruction manual to avoid overtightening, which could cause stress concentration and breakage of the glass.

5.Sealing: After installation, test the sunroof for any abnormal noises or leakage risks, and confirm that the sealing strip is not deformed due to compression.

6.Center for weight distribution: When loading luggage, heavy objects should be placed above the crossbar support points, avoiding placement directly above the glass.

Roof rack daily use guidelines and safety precautions

It is not recommended to open the windows when using the roof rack.

Suction cup mounts are strictly prohibited:

For vehicles with panoramic sunroofs, vacuum suction cups can create localized high pressure on the glass, causing cracks and potentially leading to glass breakage during driving on bumpy roads.

Height restriction risk:

Installing roof racks and roof boxes increases vehicle height, requiring caution when driving through parking garages and over height restriction barriers.

Regular maintenance:

After long journeys or driving on bumpy roads, check for loose screws. Loose mounts may transmit vibrations directly to the glass, causing damage. Over-tightening installation hardware: Tightening is not always better. Excessive torque will not make the roof rack more secure; instead, it can deform the roof panel, affecting the sunroof's alignment and sealing.
